Fishing trips are the most basic unit of data that encapsulates fishing effort and the harvesting of marine life. As such, each trip contains core data for fisheries managers. By storing fishing trip data in a uniform manner, fisheries management organizations can exchange, analyze, and combine their data with ease.

FisheryStandards.org has created a draft document for a proposed XML format to store fishing trip data starting from departure of the vessel/fisher, including the logging of each unit of fishing effort and species retained or released, and concluding with the offloading/selling of catch.

Sample XML Files

You can also download two sample fishing trip XML files. The first example is “fully expanded”, meaning that it contains every possible element and each code element is accompanied by descriptive elements. The second example consists of the mimimun amount of data for a trip. Code elements are not accompanied by descriptions as this example assumes that the system receiving the XML data already has the descriptions in its database.
